How to Do the Bucket Test Yourself

Not ready to call us just yet? Try this simple at-home method to check for leaks:

  1. Fill the pool to its normal operating level (middle of the tile line).

  2. Fill a bucket with pool water, leaving about 1 inch from the top.

  3. Place the bucket on the first or second pool step.

  4. Mark the water level inside the bucket.

  5. Shut off the pool pump and mark the water level outside the bucket.

  6. Resume normal pump operation.

  7. After 24 hours, compare both water levels.

    • If the pool water dropped more than the bucket water, you likely have a leak.

Preparing for Your Leak Detection Appointment

To ensure a smooth and efficient visit, it’s important that your pool is filled and accessible. Our technicians rely on water being at its normal level to detect leaks accurately, especially when performing underwater testing or dye tests. A clean pool also allows us to inspect and dive without obstructions, which speeds up the process and helps us locate the problem with greater precision.
